All About Subaru There was a time that the only people who bought Subaru’s were farmers, thanks to their focus on tough, dependable four-wheel drive range - but all that's changed. With SUVs and MPVs as familiar a sight on city streets as country dirt roads, Subaru has branched out with a broader range of vehicles than ever, and their quality ensures their sustained popularity. Subaru is an automobile manufacturing division of the Japanese conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), which started out in 1917. Six of FHI's divisions came together to form Subaru - hence the six-star logo and the brand's name, which means 'unite'. The first Subaru, the Subaru 1500, was launched in 1954, and since then the brand has built a strong reputation as producer of the world's toughest, most reliable and most innovative off-roaders. The company is devoted to four-wheel drives, the only car manufacturer to offer all-wheel drive as a standard on most of its models and has been at the forefront of utility vehicle design innovation from the start. Using aeronautical industry technology, Subaru was the first to use monocoque construction, electronic continuously variable transmission (ECTV), and it renowned horizontally opposed 'boxer' engines, which give superior weight distribution. Since the 1980s, Subaru has branched out into saloons, cools SUVs, as well as producing some of the most successful high-performance rally cars on the planet. All this and they have a surprising devotion to the environment too. With a recycling programme for its cars, hybrid and fuel efficiency programmes and a 'zero landfill' record for its plant in Lafayette, Indiana, this is the brand for drivers looking to go green. Bunjoo's Top Subaru Models SUBARU BRZ This a front-engine, rear wheel-drive sports car, designed to deliver maximum driving pleasure for least possible cost. The low weight and centre of gravity make this a dream to drive, and that 2.0-litre four-cylinder 'boxer' engine certainly helps pump up the pleasure factor too. Producing 197bhp and capable of 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds, this is a zippy little sporty number that looks every bit as good as it feels. Comfort, affordability and good looks - what more can you ask for? SUBARU IMPREZA STI (2008) This cult favourite is a hatchback with a difference - being based on the original Impreza's killer performances in World Rally Championships. Unusual for a hatchback, all cars in the range come with four-wheel drive, making it a popular choice for drivers looking for a smaller run-around that can cope with rural roads. SUBARU WRX STI SALOON Subaru took a break from saloon production for a while but brought the sleek style roaring back with the WRX STi. It's a highly attractive and speedy motor, managing an impressive 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds, with a top speed of nearly 160mph to boot. It's sporty but remains roomy at the same time. There's a spacious boot, room enough for four adults comfortably, and the as-standard onboard equipment is generous too. SUBARU FORESTER The earliest Forester models had a taller estate style, while newer revamped models have grown into fully fledged SUVs. Rivalling the likes of the Ford Kuga and Mazda CX-5 in the style stakes, it has the added bonus of rugged and reliable practicality, powerful four-wheel drive, and a punchy 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine option. If you're looking to keep running costs down, plump for the 2.0 litre diesel instead. SUBARU OUTBACK ESTATE Here's an off roader that's every bit as comfortable in the city as it is out in the sticks. The Outback features jacked up suspension for great off-road handling, a powerful yet satisfyingly quiet diesel engine option, and a high degree of comfort too. The as-standard onboard kit easily rivals the likes of more expensive competitors like Audi and Volvo, making it the perfect entry-level 4x4 for those on a budget.
