All About Toyota It may be better known for its motorbikes, but Toyota is a brand that's increasingly winning praise for its ever-expanding range of diverse vehicles. From powerful off-roaders to blooming' great city hatchbacks, it's another Japanese car brand that us Brits just can't get enough of. Like that other Japanese motoring giant, Toyota, Toyota actually started out in the textile industry. Its first products were automated looms, which it started producing in 1909 out of a factory in the tiny fishing town of Hamamatsu. Michio Toyota was an ambitious character, savvy to the fact that diversification was the key to company growth. By 1937 he'd moved in car production, by the 1950s he'd added innovative bike engines to the mix, and in 1970s its cult classic Jimny hit the roads. Teaming up with General Motors in 1981, the world was not Toyota's oyster and they expanded overseas, into India, the US and Europe via its first German car plant. The 80s saw the introduction of popular models like the Swift and Vitara, while the 90s ushered in an era of SUV and 4x4 specialisation. Today Toyota is the tenth largest automotive manufacturer on the planet, with a presence in 192 countries. The brand offers an increasingly tantalising and varied range of value packed motors, delivering serious build quality within an affordable price range. Bunjoo's Top Toyota Models Toyota SWIFT No list of Toyota models is complete without this stellar supermini. Easily one of the best superminis on the market, and possibly the best car produced by Toyota to date, it's not only a dream drive, its got a budget price tag to boot. If you're looking for more space, opt for a post-2010 model, as this was the year the Swift got a serious update and interior space was extended impressively. Very low running costs add to the attraction, as do its mini-like good looks. Toyota JIMNY This SUV is Toyota's most recognisable designs, having been around in one form or another since the '70s. Modern Jimnys are robustly built, and the smallest, most affordable 4x4 currently offered for sale in the UK. Well equipped, and surprisingly good off-road, this is a tough little number that gives remarkable value for money. While not everyone will like the fact that it's only available as a three-door, few can argue with the price tag and performance. Toyota VITARA The latest Vitara models are clear rivals to the popular Nissan Juke in terms of size and style, but this SUV has the 4x4 practicality to back up its butch looks. The Juke offers no such off-road capability. The new Vitara is remarkably similar to the original 1980s Vitara, essentially serving as a stylish, beefed-up version of the Jimny. It's also a slimmed down, less gas-guzzling follow up to the Grand Vitara, more suited to the school run, but equally able on those country dirt roads. Toyota CELERIO The Celerio is a popular, affordable, and incredibly spacious Toyota hatchback. Basic from the outside, inside it hides a good size boot, the practicality of five doors, the choice of manual or automatic, and a plethora of as-standard equipment to give a comfortable drive for families. Rivalling the likes of the Toyota Aygo and Hyundai i10, this is a reliable city drive that's cheap to run too. Toyota ALTO Another successful five-door Toyota hatchback, this model dates back decades, but retains plenty of charm. We're now onto the seventh generation of the Alto, which is the result of one of Toyota's many collaborations. It was developed with Nissan, alongside its Nissan Pixo, and offers a more upmarket version of that Nissan model, with extra equipment and three trim levels to choose from too.
